GwG pick of the week… super-chic organic cotton napkins by Hammocks & High Tea!

I am a sucker for table linens – I’ll admit it.  I get Martha Stewart-giddy when I set a table… anything from a fete for 8 to a quiet dinner with my husband – and cloth napkins are a serious must! That being said, we are thrilled to add these lovelies from Hammocks & High Tea to the GwG collection.  Elegant without being stuffy and super-versatile… can truly work with anything from Mod to Moroccan to Traditional.

HAPPY 2nd BIRTHDAY Green with Glamour!!!

2 years ago today our baby, Green with Glamour launched!  Born from two whip smart & stylish friends, frustrated with their lack of chic, “eco” shopping resources, built with a lot of love, long hours and luck and maintained (and continually growing) due to a serious passion for what we’re doing, thoughtful and fashionable clients and truly incredible designers, artisans and vendors.

 2nd-birthday.jpg

So… Happy Birthday to us – and our ever-expanding team!  And thanks to you all for the encouragement, love & support!!!

GwG Glossary: Fair Trade

According to OXFAM, Fair Trade is a trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect, that seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, marginalized producers and workers – for the most part in developing/3rd world communities and countries. Fair Trade organizations (backed by consumers) are engaged actively in supporting producers, awareness raising, and in campaigning for changes in the rules and practice of conventional international trade.

Bottom line: Fair Trade means 3rd world factory workers & artisans are paid reasonable rates in safe work environments for their hard work (as opposed to the horrific working conditions of sweat shops).

Leave it to the Brits to develop cruelty-free condoms. Cheeky!

Ok… even writing this is making me clutch my metaphorical pearls.  It’s not that were a bunch of prudies here at Green with Glamour, but condom-talk just isn’t really our m.o.  Anywho, my incredible hair/make up artist & always-in-the-know dear friend, Vanessa Price, sent me this fun post from Daily Candy all about French Letter’s Eco-friendly condoms.  Read the D.C. article here… We’ll leave all of the cheeky puns to them, but our hats are off to French Letter for tackling such a touchy subject, for the support of Fair Trade – and for the tasteful packaging!

Spring is in the air… our favorite floral fragrances!

Spring is the most fabulous time of year. The daylight seems to last forever, the temperature outside is just right, and flowers are blooming everywhere. I love the floral scents that linger in air.  This inspired me to discover the best floral fragrances for the season.

amauritius_flowers__200510dsc6642.jpg a-fragrant-flower.jpg a-flowers6-12-06-2.jpg

Aftelier Perfumes‘ Organic Orchid Solid Perfume is a blend of spices, orange, and yummy orchid. This fragrance is subtle, feminine, and a little bit fiery. It’s completely portable, so you can just throw it in your handbag without worrying about a spill AND you can order samples to try before you buy. You can even get a custom blend in an antique compact… tres chic!

afteliermuse-1.JPG

Tsi-La’s organic Fiori D’Arancio is so feminine and chic. It’s a bit less floral than my other faves but the freshness of spring is unmistakable. The orange, vanilla, orchids & honey mix to create a flirty and playful scent. This perfume also feels amazingly silky on the skin and is subtle enough for day but sensuous enough for night.

Bazil Essentials has perfected the floral fragrance with their Jasmine Rose Natural Perfume. Not only is this fragrance all-natural but it is also vegan and cruelty-free. The Jasmine, Rose, and Sandalwood mix to create a sweet & feminine floral bouquet of heaven. Beware though… a little bit does go a long way!

Morrissey's "face free" workplace.

It was 25 years ago, that my little, music-loving self rode my bike to Record Swap (our local record store) and I came home with Meat is Murder, the second album by The Smiths (how sad… it’s wikipedia or 1 fan site).  I’m not sure how I learned of the Morrissey-led British band or how their politically-charged 2nd album ended up on my pre-teen radar (maybe older stepbrothers or my then edgy subscription to Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine), but I listened, I loved and I never looked back.

Lyrics from “Meat is Murder”

And the flesh you so fancifully fry
Is not succulent, tasty or kind
Its death for no reason
And death for no reason is murder

And the calf that you carve with a smile
Is murder
And the turkey you festively slice
Is murder
Do you know how animals die?

Powerful stuff, right?  So… I put eating actual meat, chicken, seafood – “anything with a face” behind me right then (dairy & eggs wouldn’t go away for another 23 years – thank you very much, Rory Freedman!).  This trip down memory lane was all sparked by a recent Ecorazzi article about Morrissey’s meat-free demands for a NYC show next week and his work environment musts overall.  Hardcore, but enviable.

Nicol Paone's HILARIOUS Watchmen-inspired comedy short, starring herself & roomate, Watchmen star Malin Akerman.

Nicol Paone is the hilarious (& gorge) star of The Big Gay Sketch Show.  Her Elaine Stritch as a Wal-Mart greeter will have you doubled over in less than 30 seconds.  Through our mutual friend, Amy Procacci, I’ve met and befriended-ish the funny lady… she was even the hysterical & gorgeous celeb for the GwG tv pilot photoshoot (sneak preview coming soon).  Though currently shooting her series in NYC, she recently emailed me her latest effort – a not-at-all surprisingly hilarious sketch about stardom, struggles and super-nerds – YOU MUST WATCH!  It’s Nicol as a faux Silk Spectre from Watchmen giving a tour (to 3 major Sci-Fi geeks) of the bedroom of her roommate and real Silk Spectre actress, Malin Akerman – as Malin quietly sleeps, tries to shower, etc.  BRILLS-VILLE!

The best damn birthday brunch I've ever had!

A couple of weekends ago we went to a party with catering by Madeleine’s Bistro in Tarzana.  And every last treat was divine!  So, yesterday my husband surprised me with a birthday brunch at this magical bistro… and OMG.

We started with a bottle of organic bubbly and beignets with apple compote,  followed by french onion soup (which gets a double OMG – I thought veganism meant goodbye to this treat, but alas NO!) and red beet tartare on a “goat cheese” crouton, followed by chicken & waffles and a bigger “maque” – the bistro’s A-MA-ZING vegan take on the big mac.  And yes, there’s more… we finished our meal with a bananas foster split hot fudge and all!

I had heard from several reliable sources that Madeleine’s is the best vegan restie in Southern Cal (top 5 in the entire country)… and seriously – it’s the best I’ve had!

Less shampoo, Happier hair!

I have no bones about admitting that I only wash my hair 1-2 times a week.  Not only does my hair look healthier, but it saves on time, water and beauty product costs.  Like I said… no bones about it, but I do like a little validation:

directly via Green LA Girl

Want healthy hair? Stop shampooing so much. That’s right — Dermatologists say that shampooing your hair more than two or three times a week strips your scalp of sebum, the beneficial oil your body produces, and can damage your hair.

NPR took a closer look at this hairy issue yesterday, to find that back in the day, people used to only wash their hair once a month! A 1908 New York Times article then advised readers that shampooing every two weeks worked for some people, but that “from a month to six weeks should be a better interval if the hair is in fairly good condition.”

Times have certainly changed, because the daily “lather, rinse, repeat” mantra’s got many Americans using ostensibly 30 times the shampoo that people were using 100 years ago. Standards for personal hygiene may certainly have changed over the century, but all those shampoo and hair product commercials must have also played a role in shaping those standards and our individual bathroom habits.

Does more shampooing beget more and more spending on hair care, be they scalp conditioners, hair conditioners, sprays, gels, and the like? One NPR listener points out that because so many people put so much other gunk — in their hair, frequent shampooing kind of becomes inevitable. Another opines that if we weren’t washing our hair so much to begin with, our hair wouldn’t be so overstripped and in need of all these other products to do the work our bodies’ natural oils should be doing.

Want to wean yourself off the daily shampoo habit? Scale down gradually, maybe by switching to shampooing once every other day. Don’t stress out too much if your hair seems greasy at first; your scalp will start producing less oil as it adjusts to the new hair care routine.

Your new shampoo schedule will not only save you money and time, but also get you more compliments over time! Hair savvy fashionistas know that hair actually tends to look better on the second day after a shampoo. Wash less and learn!

Nothing to do with anything… just an old shampoo as I like.  What’s with the phone?

Recycle old lipstick tubes and makeup cases at Origins!

directly from Green LA Girl:

Lipstick tubes and powder compacts are tough to recycle, since they’re usually made of several different types of materials that need to be separated — something most recycling programs don’t have the capacity to do. But soon, you won’t need to send your old eyeshadow case to the landfills. Origins is launching Return to Origins, a new program that lets consumers bring in old cosmetic empties into Origins stores for recycling.

Starting March 29, more than 450 Origins retail stores and department store counters across the country will have recycling receptacles for your empties. Once collected, those empties will “be recycled, when possible, or responsibly converted to energy,” according to Origins.

Any brand’s empties will be accepted — a smart move, especially since Origins is owned by Estee Lauder, which owns many more less green beauty brands that WON’T be participating in this recycling program — so you don’t even need to be an Origins customer to recycle your compact. Origins will try to convert you into a customer though, with a free sample of A Perfect World Skin Cream or other Origins product.

And if you attend the Return to Origins kickoff event on Thurs., April 2, you can even get a free pampering beauty treatment! Everyone who makes it to the Origins store at Westfield Century City Shopping Center, 10250 Santa Monica Blvd., Century City, for the event happening 10 am – 10:30 am will get a free hand and arm massage.

a SLIDING house… you have to see this!

My dear Matthew (via his dear Cory) turned me onto this amazing home in England, by dRMM Architecture, that SLIDES!  Check it… I wrote a lengthier post for The Green Girls – feel free to read it here, but here’s the gist:

sliding-house_1.jpg   sliding-house_2.jpg

The outer “shell” is on a track that can slide from one end of Living area – which includes 3 buildings, a swimming pool and a courtyard.  Depending on where the shell is positioned… the pool  & courtyard can be covered or uncovered, the house can be completely enclosed or exposed to bright light!

 sliding-house_61.jpg sliding-house_5.jpg sliding-house_41.jpg sliding-house_31.jpg

The super sunny side of this entire brillsville design is that the mobility of the shell gives the homeowners great control over their interior climate, manipulating the heating and cooling loads of the house – in turn lowering their energy usage!

This week's obsession… coconut milk yogurt!

Ok… my evenings this week have been almost annoyingly busy – 4 events & 2 parties (the last for which I’m currently late)!  Don’t get me wrong – I’ve had a good to great time at each and tonight will be wonderful, I know… but, every night in heels can wear on a girl!  ANYWAY, Not much time for food/cooking this week and the events always only have nibbles, so coconut milk yogurt to the rescue!!!  Have you tried… it’s divine!

I’ve only ever tried the SO Delicious brand (not sure if anyone else makes it)… and the blueberry is officially my favorite – but their all delish!
