Do-gooder of the week: Ludacris

So just this last Saturday I was privy to a party in Malibu thrown by none other than Chris “Ludacris” Bridges – and it was a fundraiser for his Ludacris Foundation, an organization dedicated to “Helping Youth Help Themselves.”

ludacris.jpg

I have to admit, before this party, I knew nothing of Ludacris’ charitable work or the Ludacris Foundation, but since I’ve been nothing but impressed with the man and his efforts:

VISION – To inspire youth to live their dreams, uplift families and foster economic development in the community.

MISSIONTo show young people they are the architects of their future and instill our “Principles of Success” – a roadmap for achieving dreams. To connect with our youth to build stronger families and communities.

HISTORY – Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, William Engram and Chaka Zulu were the inspiration for the development of The Ludacris Foundation (TLF). The foundation is based on the principles Ludacris learned at an early age: self-esteem, spirituality, communication, education, leadership, goal setting, physical activity and community service. Officially established in December of 2001, The Ludacris Foundation was created to make a difference in the lives of youth. These men have illustrated their deep-rooted tradition of community service, which has broadened with their celebrity status. The Ludacris Foundation is committed to helping youth help themselves.

ludacris-logo.gif

As for the party…

 luda2.jpg

The man is smooth… He was thoughtful to his audience.  He was loving toward his attending family and friends.  He was generous with his stage time.  And his sunglasses were simply divine (I’m thinking they’re Mosely Tribes, but I can’t find… let me know if you have any info on them, please)!

And I certainly enjoyed my time there… saw Gene Simmons (creepy) and Andrew Keegan (cute), but Apple Levy, the Founder of The Green Girls, definitely got the scoop – with interviews and the taped performance.  Click & enjoy!

An in depth look at online beauty boutique, Beautorium… and a sweet discount for Living GWG readers!

One of my biggest challenges in keeping my daily beauty routine green is finding the best products. It is always so much harder than just popping into the local drug or department store. So once a month Living GwG is going to feature one of our favorite beauty retailers where you can purchase all of your earth and body friendly supplies. At the top of that list is Beautorium.  This online boutique takes the guess work out of your shopping. Each product, which runs the gambit from haircare to makeup, has a a full list of ingredients and handy little symbols that signify what’s most important to you, like if it’s certified organic or has not been tested on animals (hint: none of Beautorium’s products are).

beautorium1.jpg

I have fallen in love with their Exuberance line of facial care products. The Exuberance Radiance – Daily Green Tea Cleanser has won a place in my morning routine. I’m generally not a fan of cream cleansers, but this one rinses clean and leaves nothing but silky smooth skin behind it all day long. It’s fragrance free, contains no parabens, petrochemicals or sulphates and the packaging design, while minimal, is fun and bright. After all, no need to just be fabulous on the inside. Plus, it’s vegan!

beautorium-exuberance.jpg

Another of my fav products from Beautorium is the Logona Free Body Lotion. One of my criteria for anything I’m putting on my body these days, is that it’s fragrance free. I’m not anti-fragrance, but I have a perfume that I love and I don’t want my body lotion or my deodorant fighting for top billing. It’s also free of tons of other nasties you don’t want slathered all over your skin (petrochemicals, paraffin, parabens and silicone to name a few). It’s not at all greasy and goes on light, unlike some of the “natural” brands out there that feel like you’re covering yourself in petroleum jelly.

beautorium-logona.jpg

Beautorium loves the Living GwG readers as much as we love them. They are giving you 15% off your purchases at Beautorium.com! Just enter the promo code “livinggwg” at checkout. Amazing products and an excellent deal!

This week's obsession: Vintage Jewelry that sets a pretty mood for Fall

Remember the good, old days when bobbed hair was in vogue, bejeweled gauzy fabrics, ornamental hats & hair jewelry were all the rage and fast-talking intellects were in abundance? A time when the incredibly talented Jennifer Jason Leigh was getting great roles, Gwyneth Paltrow wasn’t yet the most annoying woman in the world and Matthew Broderick was actually kind of sexy… that’s right, 1994!  And yes, I do realize that Mrs. Parker & The Vicious Circle was based on Dorothy and her Algonquin Round Table friends that thrived in the 1920’s, but I watched the film the other day and the (somewhat) modern recreation of the “roaring” style of that era was simply de-lovely!

 dparker2.jpg  dparker3.jpg  dparker4.jpg

Eager for Fall 09, I’m in an elegant retro mode lately… 1920s, 1930s – even the early 1960s (thanks to Mad Men making even aerosol-sprayed hair helmets look sexy).  While my Summer look is more 70s caftans, flat sandals & big hoop earrings (which I love, but am bidding farewell until 2010)… my Fall/Winter vibe is about light, tailored layers, intricate costume jewels & femininity.  And though I not one to pull off seriously antique-y, pretty & soft looks (I’m no Mary Catherine Garrison), I do like to trick out my pencil skirts (or wide-leg pants), man-tailored white shirts and ruffled blouses with hand-me-down costume jewelry pieces and pearls.  I have a great collection of pins, cocktail rings and hair combs… but I’m a little short in the necklace department.  Enter Monica Macha

Unique, statement-y and stunning necklaces by Monica Macha.

We just added Monica’s one-of-a-kind creations to the Green With Glamour Collection.  From photos alone, we asked Monica to become one of our beloved designers… but now that I’ve inspected, admired and tried on (of course!) Monica’s pieces in person – OH MY GOD!  They are insanely beautiful and well-crafted.  I was finding that I couldn’t take my eyes of them… especially the 2 necklaces above, so I’ve displayed them prominently in the GWG Showroom (swing by & check them out if you’re in LA.  I can feast with my eyes every day!  From a simple white ribbed tank, cardy & jeans to your favorite cocktail dress… these modern mixes of yesteryear’s jewels are an incredible way to take any ensemble up about 5 notches at once.

Recipe of the Week: Easy, Breezy Bruschetta

Ok, I may be the last person on the planet to learn how easy it is to make Bruschetta… but just in case I’m not, here’s a simple & DELICIOUS recipe.  It’s almost silly how easy it is!

bruschetta.JPG

1 baguette (sliced in half lengthwise)

3 ripe tomatoes, chopped

2-3 cloves of garlic, crushed

1/2 cup of fresh basil, chopped (though I cut mine with scissors)

olive oil

balsamic vinegar

salt & pepper to taste

In a large bowl, mix tomatoes, garlic, basil, salt & pepper.  Drizzle mixture with balsamic & olive oil and toss.  Refrigerate for up to 1 hour.  About 10-15 mins before you’re to serve, pre-heat oven to 400 degrees and remove mixture from frig allowing to return to room temperature.  Brush open sides of baguette with olive oil (or margarine).  Bake bread on cookie sheet for about 5 minutes til golden.  Allow to cool for a couple of minutes then cut baguette into 1 inch slices and place on serving platter.  Spoon mixture onto bread and voila!

Serves 6

Desert Rose in Los Feliz… surprisingly de-light-ful!

I’ve talked to a lot of people who know of Desert Rose on Hillhurst Avenue, but haven’t been inclined to visit because of it’s fairly impersonal (almost airport restaurant-like) ambiance and enormous red, glass rose at the entrance.  To this I say… get over it!  I first read about this joint on Quarry Girl’s blog – and she’s a trusted source of good eats & drinks for me.  So last week, I had an opportunity to check out it one night… and the next night, I made sure to have that “opportunity” again.  Their Happy Hour is a CAN’T MISS!  Incredibly delicious martinis & margaritas for $5 and a glorious vegan menu filled with discounted yummies (there’s also plenty of non-vegan happy hour treats as well).

 desert-rose.jpeg

The staff is friendly and attentive, the food is seriously delicious (garlic “cheese” fries, falafel sliders and warm Meditteranean olives to name a few dishes) and the drinks are refreshing and tasty.  Once you’re at the bar, enjoying what the place has to offer, the ambiance completely changes – and the big, glass rose… you won’t even notice it!

Bargain Buy: Squirelly Love… Found on Etsy.

For whatever reason, I’ve been looking for things to make me smile lately.  And wow… do these little nuts make me smile!  For me Etsy can be a little daunting, but sometimes I do set aside a chunk of time to peruse their pages.  This fantastic piece, called Squirelly Love, is from a seller who goes by Enormous Champion.  I love the sleek design, the cheeky vibe and the heartfelt message (see below).

 squirrelly-love.jpg

Made in the USA from sustainably harvested wood. The heart was painted with a non toxic, no-VOC water based paint. The little squirrels were left the natural color of the beautiful wood. All are finished and sealed with beeswax.

As put by Enormous Champion:

These two squirrels are in love, plain and simple. But, they know that they have to work together to maintain their relationship. Compromise and team work are key. Together they hold their little love up

.squirrelly-love4.jpg squirrelly-love3.jpg squirrelly-love2.jpg

I know this isn’t one of my typical bargain buys, but for $30… a well-designed piece that puts smiles on faces certainly seems like a bargain to me.
