Today is a big day for Green With Glamour – it’s our Fall launch and usually the work day that excites me most and swells me with pride, but of the 3 years we’ve been active… today is by far my favorite! You see, we typically celebrate each season’s launch with a gorgeous celebrity photoshoot (and trust me – that’s exciting too), but this time around we decided to celebrate with a meeting of some of our favorite minds as we think this season is the BEST YET of the “green” style movement. These are exceptional designers (some new to GWG, some have been with us for years) that inspire us on levels both creative and compassionate. Women who are working today to preserve the integrity of tomorrow… these are The Women of Eco-Design photographed by the incomparable Lelah Foster!

The Classicist – Jadie Kadletz of PI Organic
The Forward Thinker – Lizz Wasserman of Popomomo
The Bohemian – Fahmina of Fahmina
The Glam Girl – Kelly Barry of Kelly B Couture
The Curator – Deana Bracken of Green With Glamour
In further celebration of these amazing women, GWG is offering 20% OFF all of the above lines with coupon code GWGFALL20. Please click here for more about The Women of Eco-Design!

I mean seriously… this could not be easier! I never really understood the merits of “slow-cooking” (crock pot-ery) until last winter when I realized that just about everyone I know was “doin’ it”. It’s energy-efficient (a slow cooker uses something like one 10th the energy of the typical fast & regular speed methods). AND I always equated crock pots with beef stew or 1950’s canned veggies & mayonnaise-type dishes, so I had never given this little miracle worker a second thought. My mistake! This Savory Bean & Spinach Soup is fast, easy, delicious, good for you… and I’ll bet you have every ingredient in your cupboard.

Who knew?
Prep time: 5 minutes (!) Cook time: Approx. 5-7 hours (Hello, dinner is made while I’m at the office!)
Ingredients
- 3 (14 ounce) cans vegetable broth
- 1 (15 ounce) can tomato puree
- 1 (15 ounce) can great northern beans, drained and rinsed or 1 small white beans, drained and rinsed
- 1/2 cup uncooked brown rice
- 1/2 cup onion, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
- 2 garlic cloves, chopped
- 8 cups fresh spinach or kale leaves, coarsely chopped
Directions
-
In a 3 1/2- or 4-quart slow cooker, combine vegetable broth, tomato puree, beans, rice, onion, basil, oregano, salt, pepper and garlic.
-
Cover; cook on low heat setting 5-7 hours or on high heat setting 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours.
-
Just before serving, stir in spinach or kale. Um… that’s it!

Let’s face it, mani/pedi’s aren’t the healthiest or the best for the environment. The polishes are full of toxins, bad for you and bad for the land fill. And let’s not even talk about the harsh chemicals we need to remove the coveted color. It’s sad, but true. So it looks like we’ll all just have to get by with just a buff and a file.
Just kidding! I haven’t had bare toes since 1998. I don’t really want to start now. Thanks to the whole slew of new products popping up with less nasty chemicals and improved pigmentation, I don’t have to and neither do you.

I decided to conduct a little experiment, a Pepsi Challenge, if you will, and put a polish sans toxins up against a very popular brand of traditional polish, who shall remain nameless. The traditional polish’s contender is Butter London, a brand from Seattle (and recently featured in Vogue, In Style, People, Lucky – you name it. They’re blowing up!). They have a “3 Free” policy, which means none of their polishes or products contain Formaldehyde, Toluene (a soil contaminator that can effect the nervous system) or DBP (which has been linked to cancer and infertility). They have a no animal testing policy and their color selection is completely cutting edge and I pretty much want one of each.

Butter – blowing raspberries
Here are my findings:
Application: Both polishes went on smooth and even. I quickly realized why I pay $35 every three weeks to have a professional paint my toe nails. Apparently I have the painting skills of a four year old. Color: I used Butter’s “Blowing Raspberries” (reddish) and the traditional brand’s “Moonlight Over Moscow” (deep purple, almost black). That’s right, I’ve had two different colors on my toes for a week and a half and I live in LA where it’s still warm, so hullo! open toe. All for you, my Lovlies. Both colors were evenly and deeply pigmented. Drying: Here is where the most noticeable difference is. Butter’s polish took about 15 minutes longer to dry thoroughly than the traditional brand. Durability: It’s been 10 days and not a chip on either foot. Conclusion: Extra drying time is well worth kicking the toxins to the curb.

So, Treehugger did this fantastic feature on a bunch of designs done by Latin American designers, many for Chile’s “Remade” contest (link, in case you read Spanish). They were are wonderfully creative, but I just must talk about 3 in particular!

Have you ever??? And I LOVE that they utilize the bending waist! The Barbie Doll legs salad servers are from the brilliant mind of Chilean design student, Catalina Villa.

Between you and me… I actually lose sleep over the amount of plastic bags this planet is producing, using and discarding – which in turn makes Chilean design student, Camila Labra, my heroine because her entire line of boots is made from old paper bags! I already have an email out to Camila, asking about purchasing… will let you know when I hear news.

And finally, the best possible use for those old mixed tapes some ex-boyfriend made for you. I mean, C’mon…what the hell else are you going to do with something that has 5 tracks by Soundgarden on it? (but save the Mudhoney & Afgan Whigs… that boyfriend may not have been all bad). Anyway, this shrug is actually knit from yesterday’s cassettes and is the perfect union of past & present! Created by Fernanda Henríquez, Cindy Silva, Paulina Vilches and Teresa Monreal… more Chilean design smarties.

I spent 6 hours in my kitchen the other night… mind you my laptop was present and we have a tv/dvd set up in there – so it wasn’t all cooking, but it was a lot of cooking! I knew this week was going to be insanely busy prepping for GWG’s Fall launch and cooking would pretty much be out of the question, so I went gangbusters 1 night!
First came the Gazpacho… I had tons of fresh veggies left over from the weekend and I’m clinging to the last little bits of Summer, so I found a great recipe on VegDaily and ran with it!

What I threw into my food processor:
- 6-8 tomatoes
- 1 hot pepper (I chose Anaheim, from my own little garden)
- juice from 1/4 lime
- 1/4 cup chickpeas
- 1/2 cucumber (save other half for end of recipe)
- coarse sea salt
- 2 cloves garlic
- cilantro
- just a splash of water
After you’ve got that Gazpacho-y consistency, chop up the remaining cucumber and throw in. Top with some fresh ground black pepper… and Enjoy!
After that came the mushroom sautee. I had an abundance of portabello & white button mushrooms and leeks… so I chopped and sauteed, then scooped onto couscous. So hearty and divine!

This one’s certainly not rocket science, but it’s worthy of a mention:
- Loads of mushrooms, cleaned and sliced
- 2 leeks, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
- 2 handfuls of clean, trimmed spinach leaves
- olive oil
- marsala wine
- 1 tsp thyme
- salt & pepper
Heat the oil and add the scallions to sautee for just a minute or 2. Add all of the mushrooms and generously drizzle with Marsala. Cover and let cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the spinach, garlic, thyme, salt & pepper and more Marsala if needed. Cover and let cook for 3-5 more minutes. I did add some of the mix to couscous to enjoy instantly… but the next day, I scooped the mixture up with some hearty bread – and it was Mon Dieu all over again!

A little bit frilly, a little bit Rock-n-Roll, the Siouxsie dress by Prophetik is the perfect piece to wear now with flat sandals and later with tights & booties! And until Thursday night… it’s a laughably low $37 (um, yeah… that’s $80 OFF)!

Delicate black ruffles and button details smartly offset the 2 layer design of the Siouxsie dress (thin crème organic cotton over black & crème patterned under-dress)… so cool! Of organic cotton & silk. Made in the US, machine wash.
Sizing note: This piece tends to run a bit small – please take this into consideration when ordering. Enjoy!
Charity note: Prophetik supports The Asian Elephant Art & Conservation Project (AEACP), a non-profit organization dedicated to saving the dimishing number of Asian elephants internationally through its work with domesticated elephants.

Giving my beauty regiment an earth friendly face lift did not happen over night. There was no dramatic arm sweep of all my synthetic fragranced, sulfate filled products into a trash bag. Sending them all to the landfill would have been an eco-sin of the first degree. Besides, who can afford to replace every shampoo, face wash, powder and eye shadow all at once? Kudos to you, if that’s in your budgie, but I am taking a different approach. Every time something in my daily beauty routine needs replacing I do a little research and purchase a product that is eco-friendly, not to mention much healthier.
This week my mission was eyeliner…pronto. Somehow, I ended up with only a tiny little nub left and I shudder to think of a day without eyeliner. Of course, being the beauty connoisseur that I am, Sephora is not new to me. (Hello, who doesn’t love free samples?) But they just weren’t selling the type of product I have been in the market for ever since I’ve been greening my makeup collection. But low and behold, after a few minutes with Google, I was oh-so pleased to find that while I wasn’t paying attention, Sephora has started their very own natural beauty line (and No Animal Testing)!

Their Pure Eyeliner was just what I was in the market for and all I had to do was run over to my local Sephora to get it. Crisis averted. No waiting for ground shipping or paying more than the eyeliner cost in the first place for a rush delivery. And I was very happy to notice that my frequent buyer points were still on record. With their bamboo encased shadows and ten different shades of Pure Lipgloss, I have a feeling I’ll be wracking those points right up again.

Available in 9 colors!
