New Feature: Runway to Real way

A completely non-”Eco” vice of mine is glossy magazines.  Vanity Fair and Town & Country and non-negotiable… I’ll most likely subscribe until one of our deaths.  As for fashion mags, I load up on Fall Fashion issues, April “Green” issues and a handful of randoms throughout the year.  I do enjoy savoring the editorial, larger-than-life creations of all of the power designers… and have that inner dialogue about some of the really out there pieces (as I think most of us do).  “Who would wear that?”  “How would I make that work for myself?” “It doesn’t really matter because it’s $15,000.”  Sometimes I look at these beautiful, uber-expensive pieces and realize that GWG carries an equally gorgeous, but totally wearable (and eco!) piece that may resemble the glossy magazine show-stoppers.  Enter Runway to Real Way.

Recipe of the week: Pumpkin & Raisin bisquits

This is directly from Fat Free Vegan Kitchen… she has mastered the art of Southern-style vegan cooking with a great nod to seasonability!  And her food photos are sexy & delicious…

Fat-Free Pumpkin and Raisin Biscuits

If you want to make the dough itself a little sweeter, substitute agave nectar for a couple tablespoons of the soy milk. Or, if you want sweetness without calories, try adding a little stevia or your favorite sweetener to the batter.

2 cups white whole wheat flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/4 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon cloves
1/4 cup raisins
1/2 cup pumpkin (canned or cooked, pureed, and drained)
1/2 cup plain soy milk (plus additional, as needed)
1 tablespoon lemon juice

Preheat oven to 425F and lightly oil a non-stick baking sheet. Mix the dry ingredients together well (flour through raisins). Add the pumpkin and mix until crumbly (do not overmix). Combine the soymilk and lemon juice and add it, stirring until a soft dough forms. If all flour is not moistened, add additional soymilk a teaspoon at at time until dough forms a ball.

Turn out the dough onto a well-floured surface and sprinkle the top lightly with flour. Roll out about 3/4 inch thick. Using a 1 1/2-2-inch wide biscuit cutter or glass dipped in flour, press straight down without twisting to cut into 12-15 biscuits.

Place the biscuits, sides lightly touching, on the oiled sheet. Bake until tops are lightly browned, 9-11 minutes. Serve hot.

Servings: 14
Yield: 12-15

From Crazy Sexy Life… Rory Freedman's 20 tips for a better life!

We don’t typically re-post other people’s writing here, but considering how much we love Rory Freedman (best-selling author of Skinny Bitch) and the healthy-living blog, Crazy Sexy Life… we though we’d be fools to not share this wisdom:

guest profile

1. Don’t say “yes” when you mean “no.” It’ll make you resentful. Say what you mean and mean what you say.

2. When driving, if someone wants to get in front of you, let him in front of you. And do it with a smile. It’ll make his day better, and it’ll make you feel good. You just changed the world.

3. Try to make a gratitude list each day. Include big things and little things. Invite your friends to make their own lists; you can all email one another each day, sharing your gratitude.

4. Don’t be a problem solver when a friend just wants you to be a listener.

5. Call your parents or grandparents. Sometimes, a five-minute phone call is all they need to feel loved.

6. Be a good neighbor: Be considerate inside and outside your home/apartment so your noise doesn’t bother those around you. That includes opening and closing your front door quietly.

7. Pee in the shower. If we each did this once a day, it would save an enormous amount of water and toilet paper (trees).

8. Write a “fan letter.” Tell someone you know, or someone you’ve never met, why you admire him or her. You’ll make someone’s day.

9. Curb your jealousy. Be happy for others.

10. Be willing to be wrong. If someone has a grievance with you, really try to see her point of view. If called for, apologize. It’s hard to do, but it feels really good and makes life so much easier.

11. If you are in a room with someone you don’t know, introduce yourself right away. It takes away the social discomfort immediately.

12. Pick a cause close to your heart, and get involved. You don’t have to quit your job and dive in headfirst. Just get involved on some level and do what you can when you can. Go slightly beyond your comfort zone but don’t overextend yourself.

13. Be a good friend to your friends. Tell them what’s good about them, that you appreciate them, and make the effort to spend time with them.

14. Go vegetarian. Animals raised and slaughtered for food suffer immeasurably. Visit GoVeg.com for a free vegetarian starter kit.

15. Do your best to think good thoughts. They affect your health, happiness, and the people around you.

16. Do something frivolous for someone you love. (It doesn’t have to be extravagant.) It feels so good to do nice things for other people, it’s almost selfish!

17. Practice accepting compliments. The person complimenting you is giving you a gift. Receive it graciously, even if it is difficult.

18. Be generous with your compliments. Don’t blow smoke up anyone’s ass. Just say nice things when they occur to you.

19. Forgive those who have wronged you. Holding onto anger and resentment poisons your body and your life. There are no benefits in staying mad. Let go. It’s okay.

20. Forgive yourself. It’s okay to be imperfect and to have made mistakes. Try to do better, that’s all.

Want to see inside Deana's closet…

High-fashion, eco-sublime magazine, Ecouterre did (posted by Jasmin Malik Chua, 10/22/09):

Deana Bracken, Co-founder and Owner of Green With Glamour

Deana Bracken, Green With Glamour

Deana Bracken, who co-founded the online eco-boutique Green With Glamour, gravitates toward classic pieces that can be glammed up with eye-popping accents. “I’m not a huge trend follower,” she says, “but eco-design is so inspiring and hunting for vintage is so delicious.” Running your own online eco-boutique (which the Los Angeleno does alongside her friend Kathleen Rowan) has its privileges, as well, and Bracken admits to raiding the virtual racks for pieces to add to her own wardrobe. “It just makes sense, right?” she says. Below, Bracken reveals which accessory she never leaves home without and what you’ll find her wearing by the pool of the Parker Hotel in Palm Springs.

Deana Bracken, Green With Glamour

I recently moved into a house with a teeny, tiny closet, so pre-move, I donated close to half my wardrobe to Dress For Success and The Discovery Shop. I kept only pieces I love and my best basics. The purge was incredibly enlightening and I now realize that it’s unnecessary to have gobs of clothing to be stylish!

I now realize that it’s unnecessary to have gobs of clothing to be stylish!

I keep my outfits simple and I pretty much have two looks. Spring/summer means vintage caftans with flat sandals and minidresses or shorts with high-wedged espadrilles. Fall/winter is all about juxtaposed layers: ribbed tanks with structured jackets, man-tailored shirts with slouchy cardigans, vintage dresses with tights and heels topped with an old jean jacket—all finished with scarves and statement jewelry.

Deana Bracken, Green With Glamour

Palm Springs is a favorite weekend spot for me…the heat, the look, the easy glamour. It’s also my favorite place to “thrift” (check out the many Angel View thrift stores if you’re in the desert). I pair these vintage floor-length dresses with flat sandals and big hoop earrings. The center dress is a 1980s Mary Quant design that you’ll often find me wearing at the Parker Hotel, poolside.

Deana Bracken, Green With Glamour

I’m crazy for lace! It’s delicate and girlie, so I typically pair a lace piece with ribbed tank, beat-up jeans, and ballerina flats. From left: Stella McCartney (a hero of mine), Covet, and two vintage tops.

Deana Bracken, Green With Glamour

I keep my bottoms basic: black pencil skirt, black wide-leg pants, black skinny pants…you get the picture. These three tops from Green With Glamour are all perfect pieces to heighten a day or evening look, feminine without being fussy. From left: Sublet, The Battalion, and EcoSkin.

Deana Bracken, Green With Glamour

I almost always wear my hair up, so hair accessories help me change up my look from day to day. And scarves are a bit of an obsession for me…the organic cotton, hand-drawn pieces by Popomomo are some of my favorites!

Deana Bracken, Green With Glamour

I always carry a clutch bag (and heels) at night. It’s a quick and easy way to elevate an outfit for the evening. Here are some of my favorites: vintage Yves Saint Laurent, a vegan clutch from Matt & Nat, recycled leather ruffle clutch by ReFind Originals, and a sleek and chic black hemp envelope clutch by Heather Heron.

Deana Bracken

Kirsten Muenster is a brilliant jewelry artist. I consider her the Elsa Peretti of our time. She works with recycled metals, fossils, and rare, safely mined gems. Necklaces in back are by Geraldine Rincon and Monica Macha.

Deana Bracken, Green With Glamour

Glorious shoes! I do not buy any new leather, so my shoes are either vegan or vintage. Clockwise from the back: Tara Subkoff for Easy Spirit (not vegan, but over four years old, mostly fabric and grandfathered in), vintage Pucci, Beyond Skin (fabulous vegan line!), Stella McCartney, Melissa, Stella McCartney, again…ah, shoes!

Deana's latest article for The Green Girls: Animal Prints for the HOME… go beyond your wardrobe!

To me, animal prints (not skins) never go out of style!  I do love to spice up an ensemble with a leopard cardigan or some zebra ballet flats, but the boost in chic-ness these pieces can deliver to a fashion look… can easily be acheived in the home as well!

I’ve always been a big fan of Areaware’s animal pillows… I have a bird and a squirrel living comfortably side by side in my Living Room at home, but this Leopard number is just stunning!  Of 100% Organic Cotton with poly fill & made in Brooklyn, this big kitty will make a seriously chic statement wherever you chose to let him or her prowl!

Whatever your design M.O…. from the sleekest of Modern to the most tasteful Traditional, a zebra print is a perfect fit!  This super-soft recycled cotton throw from In2Green, not only adds some serious style to your space, but will keep you oh-so-cozy on a chilly day.  More colors available (and makes the perfect gift!).

And speaking of cozy… have you ever felt organic cotton bath towels?!?  SOOOO soft and supple!  West Elm does a great “Safari” print – much like Zebra – that is as stylish as it is soft and the perfect way to spice up a boring bathroom!
And to keep chic underfoot, FLOR tiles are always a great go-to!  You may not want to cover a huge floor space with their “Stampede” print, but these not-so-subtle carpet tiles are perfect for a hallway runner or small area rug.
Giddy Up!

Another great online retailer for beauty… Upurea!

The hubs and I bought our holiday travel tickets this weekend and I’m already dreading the chaos that comes along with getting to and from our families. Carry-ons will be essential for the shorter trips and that got me thinking about travel size products. I do use refillable travel size bottles for some things, but I was curious to see what was on the market as far as travel size eco-beauty goes. That search lead me to our featured beauty retailer of the month – Upurea.com.  They have a huge selection of travel sized…well everything. I happen to be a sucker for a kit, preferably something that comes in it’s own carrying pouch, which I will, of course, re-purpose later.

This Mini Travel Set in Rosemary Mint (yum!) by Deep Steep caught my eye. With bubble bath, body butter and other fun products you can take a little indulgence on the road with you. Sneaking away from the holiday onslaught of relatives for a little R&R has never been easier.

ds_rm_mini_set.jpg

I found shopping at Upurea to be a joy. They have bright symbols to indicate if products are organic, certified organic, vegan, etc… and most products have a complete list of ingredients below the description. They also have a points system so you stash some beauty bucks away for later every time you shop.
They also have a really nice selection of natural makeup (not to mention hair and skin care products, fragrances and bath & body products). I like the Vegan Cheek and Lip Shimmer from Perfect Organics. I’m not sure I’d use it on my cheeks, but the variety of colors will perk up any one’s pucker.

po_lcs_dc.jpg

The last item in my online cart was a little something I’ve been needing to replace in my ongoing effort to green my makeup collection. Nvey Eco’s Organic Erase Concealer is the perfect thing to cover up those little things that aren’t so perfect. It’s certified organic and there are several shades to choose from.

Check out the variety for yourself, you won’t be disappointed.

GWG gets a lovely nod from wedding magazine, The Knot!

I’m in a wedding state of mind.  One of my dear friends is getting married next September… and for the 1st time EVER – I’m in the wedding.  So, also for the 1st time ever… I’m looking at wedding magazines (I may have looked at 1 or 2 years & years ago when I was engaged, but once we decided to elope – recycle bin).

 theknotcoverfinal1.jpg

The Knot is a gorgeous magazine.  It actually made me excited about helping to plan a wedding, miss that I never got that wedding dress, and of course, wish I could register for gifts all over again (check out GWG’s gift registry)!  And the editors of The Knot chose a wonderful gift, the trio of Fleur vases by Lighten Up Design… as one of their top picks!

Just because Summer's over… doesn't mean you should put the SUNBLOCK away!

What better time than fall to invest in a great sunscreen? Just because the summer heat isn’t constantly reminding us that we need to make sure our skin is protected from UV rays, doesn’t mean we can slack on our sunscreen application. Obviously all of you savvy readers use a moisturizer with an SPF in it, which is perfect for those days that you’re sitting at your desk for a good chunk of the day or just running from the car into the grocery store.

Sunday I walked to our local farmers market for a weeks worth of yummy fall veggies (I heart butternut squash), clearly this called for a bit more coverage. Coola Suncare is the perfect thing. They have an SPF 30 just for faces that I use instead of my normal moisturizer on days I’m playing outside. It’s not at all greasy and is unscented, which I love. The arms and legs get the Total Body formula, also in 30. Don’t think of it as having pale skin, think of it as preserving the skin tone nature intended for you.

coola_face30_unscented.jpg  coola_totalbody30_plumeria.jpg

The best part about this sunscreen is it’s free of the 3 nasty Ps – paba, paraben and petroleum. I also love their packaging which is minimal, with no infuriating jar inside a box, wrapped in plastic deal. Of course, as is all of Living GwG’s features, no animal testing. And all made in our good old US of A.

Protecting your skin is the number one trick to looking youthful. Keep the wrinkles away and keep them guessing!

Does you know how easy it is to make Baba Ghanouj/Ghanoush?

I have never bought eggplant before, NEVER.  I don’t particularly care for it – other than as the delicious Middle Eastern dish, Baba Ghanouj.  And I’m almost embarrassed to admit the reason why I bought eggplant for the first time… I like the way they looked.  That beautiful, dark blackish purple, the smooth skin – they’re a handsome vegetable!  But as the days passed, there they sat on my counter top… I had no actual plan for them.

I love, Love, LOVE Baba Ghanouj!  It’s something that I have to order if it’s on the menu… and I had no idea how simple it is to make.

baba-ghanouj.jpg

What you’ll need:

  • 1 large eggplant (or 2 smalls – like my beautiful babies!)
  • 2 cloves garlic (I used 3, but I’m crazy about garlic)
  • 3 tbsp tahini
  • 3 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.  With a fork, poke eggplant(s) in several places. Bake on a cookie sheet for about 45 minutes, until eggplant is super soft and let cool.  Peel away skin (and cut off stem & leaves obviously).  Place mushy inner eggplant in blender/food processor with other ingredients and blend.  Enjoy with pieces of bread, pita chips, fresh veggies or even spread on a lavash to drive a fresh & delicious wrap!

October 1 is a special day to me… it’s a day to celebrate Vegetarianism!  I’ve been a vegetarian for (gulp) almost 26 years  – Vegan for 2) and finally my grandmother has accepted that it not a “phase”.  It’s my life.  And for the past 2 years, my once steak-savoring husband has joined the ranks.  When he went Veg, I was shocked!  He was someone who truly enjoyed just about every meat around.   But whether it was exposure to my lifestyle, his ever-growing love for animals, whatever… his priorities shifted and here we are.  If he can do it – anyone can!

Do the planet a solid and give up meat for 24hrs… and here are some suggestions if you want to get involved!

Wear informative vegetarian message T-shirts throughout the month
Display World Vegetarian Day / Vegetarian Awareness Month posters at libraries, supermarkets, co-ops, health food stores, churches, art centers and other appropriate public areas
Invite friends and family home for a celebration meal
Ask libraries (public, college, high school, etc) to set-up a display of their vegetarian titles
Encourage restaurants, co-ops, and health food stores to support and publicize their vegetarian options, including in their promotional flyers
Host a screening of vegetarian and related documentaries or films for friends, and/or arrange to have them shown on public access TV
Place an ad in newspapers and other local publications
Host a potluck, picnic, or meal at a restaurant
Write a letter to the editor announcing these occasions and tell about how vegetarianism has benefited you
Solicit bookstores to set up a display of vegetarian cookbooks and to offer special discounts throughout the month
Give an educational presentation for any group you are affiliated with
Ask your city mayor or town supervisor to sign a World Vegetarian Day proclamation (Contact us for a sample)
Deliver a vegetarian lunch to local officials (with media coverage, if possible) or to local radio talk show hosts
Serve a meatless meal at area homeless shelters
