Jorja’s Jorgeous (couldn’t help myself, sorry) ensemble for the GwG photoshoot…

It could have been a potato sack and she would have looked stunning, but the final look consisted of the following:

The Carta top by The Battalion ww_bat_cartatop.jpg

ww_kb_whitetrench.jpgThe organic Tabitha trench by Kelly B

The Bernie pencil skirt by Toggeryww_tog_skirt.png

Morrissey’s “face free” workplace.

It was 25 years ago, that my little, music-loving self rode my bike to Record Swap (our local record store) and I came home with Meat is Murder, the second album by The Smiths (how sad… it’s wikipedia or 1 fan site).  I’m not sure how I learned of the Morrissey-led British band or how their politically-charged 2nd album ended up on my pre-teen radar (maybe older stepbrothers or my then edgy subscription to Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine), but I listened, I loved and I never looked back.

meat-is-murder.jpg

Lyrics from “Meat is Murder”

And the flesh you so fancifully fry
Is not succulent, tasty or kind
Its death for no reason
And death for no reason is murder

And the calf that you carve with a smile
Is murder
And the turkey you festively slice
Is murder
Do you know how animals die?

Powerful stuff, right?  So… I put eating actual meat, chicken, seafood – “anything with a face” behind me right then (dairy & eggs wouldn’t go away for another 23 years – thank you very much, Rory Freedman!).  This trip down memory lane was all sparked by a recent Ecorazzi article about Morrissey’s meat-free demands for a NYC show next week and his work environment musts overall.  Hardcore, but enviable.

Nicol Paone’s HILARIOUS Watchmen-inspired comedy short, starring herself & roomate, Watchmen star Malin Akerman.

Nicol Paone is the hilarious (& gorge) star of The Big Gay Sketch Show.  Her Elaine Stritch as a Wal-Mart greeter will have you doubled over in less than 30 seconds.  Through our mutual friend, Amy Procacci, I’ve met and befriended-ish the funny lady… she was even the hysterical & gorgeous celeb for the GwG tv pilot photoshoot (sneak preview coming soon).  Though currently shooting her series in NYC, she recently emailed me her latest effort – a not-at-all surprisingly hilarious sketch about stardom, struggles and super-nerds – YOU MUST WATCH!  It’s Nicol as a faux Silk Spectre from Watchmen giving a tour (to 3 major Sci-Fi geeks) of the bedroom of her roommate and real Silk Spectre actress, Malin Akerman – as Malin quietly sleeps, tries to shower, etc.  BRILLS-VILLE!

Last night was good… Ryan Philippe, SRO’s book signing at Stella McCartney, & Apple from the Green Girls!

In that very order.  I wanted to do some sort of twist on Ice Cube’s, “Today was a good day”, but I couldn’t seem to make it work.  ANYWAY, for those of us in LA & New York… you know how you always seem to run into the same 1 celebrity over & over (my husband went through a phase where he saw Giovani Ribisi so often it made him angry.  Who’s yours???).  I have the good luck of mine being the oh-so-gorgeous Ryan Philippe.  My friend Sara and I were on our way to the Style, Naturally book signing at Stella McCartney and we decided to pop into an old haunt for a pre-party drinkie.  There he was with his best gal, his darling kids and Breckin Meyer… we locked eyes, smiled, I secretly melted, and the exchange was over… but still.     I rarely swoon.  Mr.Philippe = swoon.

 ryan-philiipe.jpg

Moving on… Next was the actual party for Summer Rayne Oakes‘ book, Style, NaturallyFirst, the location was brilliant – Stella McCartney’s shop here on Beverly is just lovely.  We mingled on the back patio, drinking organic Veev cocktails & eating delish vegan passed hors d’oeuvres by Akasha (fantastic blinis!),  while Summer – looking gorgeous, of course – did her thing and a dj played quite decent music. I have to say – it was absolutely one of the nicest “Eco” events (or maybe I should just say events) to which I’ve ever been!  The people were good-looking AND friendly, the atmosphere was perfect and vibe was easy (no paparazzi).  Total enjoyment!

sro-book.jpg

To make the evening even more special, I met The Green Girls‘ very own, Apple Levy (pictured below)!  After she interviewed SRO, we both found ourselves waiting for the all female valet team, Valet of the Dolls (I kid you not).  She was vibrant, kind and complementary.

Green with Glamour named on Lucky Magazine’s shortlist of “Eco Sites” they love!

A nod from Lucky Mag is definitely a feather in our cap… & the Prophetik dress they chose to feature is one of our favorite new pieces for Spring (see, GwG pick of the week  the pattern is painted by actual elephants)… but Gossip Girl’s Vanessa gracing the cover- Hell yeah!

Julia Louis-Dreyfus… a “green” oh-my-goddess!

So… I don’t typically get Shape Magazine – I’m not really into working out & I’m fairly overwhelmed by all of the weight loss promises on the cover, but Green with Glamour received April’s issue in the mail because we have a pair of fair trade gold earrings featured as one of their favorite “Eco” gifts.  I audibly gasped when I pulled the mag out of the envelope.  Um… SHE’S 48!!!

JLD’s a f*&#ing eco goddess!  Not only is she immensely talented, but she’s really, REALLY “green”.  From environmentally-friendly building to locally-raised foods, she lives the good life & uses her power for good.  She started off strong 27 years ago on SLN… and it’s like she’s just continues to get better. Brava!

Green with Glamour’s recycled glass bowl featured in the Michelle Obama (March ‘09) issue of VOGUE magazine!

We don’t typically send a shout out to ourselves when we get a press write up (though feel free to check them out on our As Seen In page), but with this one… we just had to:

 mo-vogue-cover.jpg     mo-vogue-page.jpg

That’s us in the “natural selections” in their top 100 under $100 story… the recycled glass footed bowl stuffed with lemons.   We love being a part of such an esteemed publication like Vogue, but THE MICHELLE OBAMA ISSUE… hell, yeah!

Green with Glamour picks of the week… a la The Watson Twins!

Both Chandra & Leigh have always been strong supporters, stylish inspirations & wonderful mouthpieces for Green with Glamour, so this week I’ve asked them to pick their favorites.

Now, The Watson Twins are obviously twins… and I’m sure at some point in their lives were outfitted in identical ensembles to play up that whole thing, but I find their styles to be markedly individualistic (i.e. they do not dress like one another OR like anyone else I know). While Chan’s look has an easy chic to it, vintage-y & natural (sweet dresses & skinny jeans), Leigh is an adventurer (metallic leggings & green shorts with suspenders – not together. well, maybe). If you saw one of her outfits on a hanger – you would say “no way!” And then you see it on Leigh and you say “YES!” She rocks it every damned time! Anyway, onto the picks (as written by Leigh & Chan respectively)…

twinsleigh.jpgLeigh

wa_gp_po_mft_dkbalsam.png 1) “my favorite things” scarf – Popomomo

This scarf is perfect for traveling in style!! I am on the road alot and when hitting different climates everyday it is important to have something versatile. This scarf is the perfect addition to a corduroy blazer, jean jacket or pea coat. For me the size is great cause if I’m out and it starts raining and I of course have forgotten my umbrella in the hotel room… I can pull this scarf over my head to make a lil’ hood. It’s key ladies!!

ww_es_danburite.png 2) danburite wrap – Ecoskin
Cozy and chic!! I have been looking around town for the perfect long sweater that is an instant upgrade to any outfit and THIS IS IT! I love the hood and the color goes with anything. If it’s raining, adding this sweater under my favorite trench for warmth and style is the real hook-up.

lf_dino_skeleton.jpg 3) skeleton pillow – Ortolan Organic
I love all of the GWG pillow picks. A pillow can take a boring boudoir or a lousy living room and turn it into a place with style and class. This pillow in particular is a favorite! I love the size and design. The simple colors make it a compliment to anything from rich velvet to a simple solid cotton. This pillow is unique and thats what I look for, the kind of decor my guests ask about. It’s a piece that elevates a room in an artistic way and its 100% organic!

Chandratwinschan.jpg

ww_lavenderdara1.jpg 1) dara cardigan – Lara Miller

I have been coveting this item ever since it caught my eye on GreenWithGlamour.com. I love adding things to my wardrobe that are basic and versatile… layers are key and this cardigan with a pair of simple jeans, scarf, tank top or a funky little black skirt could be dressed up or worn down. Loving it!

le_gh_cherryburlbowl.jpg 2) cherry burl bowl – Hitoshi Tanaka
I am a sucker for anything made of natural wood… furniture, jewelry, state parks, etc. For me texture is always key and this bowl with it’s silky smooth finish is a treat for the eye and the fingertips! I love the variation in tone, the dimples and cracks… an the fact that this is a natural material, so beautiful only mother nature could have created… let’s just say “I’m sold!”

l_g_th_espresso-cups.jpg 3) hand painted espresso cups – Ceramica Palopo

Years ago my husband and I were in Arizona for a friends wedding, they pointed us in the direction of a sprawling store that had a plethora of hand painted items for Mexico and South America. So many colors, brush strokes and hours of labor go in to creating these functional works of art, it was love at first sight. I have also always had an obsession with coffee mugs, we have a collection at our co-op from 60’s mid-century modern and 70’s ceramic to English tea cups and souvenir mugs from across the country… the personality of these little guys would be a great addition to our cupboard of mugs.

It’s a The Watson Twins kind of week…

Fortune smiled on me about 3 1/2 years ago. We were moving back to L.A. after a 3 year stint in Philadelphia and I found a gorgeous Silver Lake bungalow online into which we moved. Little did I realize that moving into that place would change my life! By the grace of ____ (fill in the blank), our next door neighbors ended up being Chandra Watson – of The Watson Twins & her husband, Russ Pollard (of the fantastic band, Everest)! We became instant friends (well… almost instant – my husband & I are a bit reclusive) and through Chan & Russ’ charm & persistence, we became part of an incredible group of friends – which of course included the other half of The Watson Twins, the oh-so-gorgeous Leigh.

twins1.jpg

That’s Leighla on the left & Channie on the right… stunning, no?

I could really gush forever about these 2, but I’ll stick to the pertinents… what amazing & inspirational friends they are, their doubly chic, but very individual styles and of course, they’re beautiful music.

There are a couple of reasons for this homage… 1) We’re fast approaching Green with Glamour’s 2nd anniversary and The Watson Twins were the original main page models & 1st impression for the site when we launched ‘07! Below is a snapshot from that shoot – Chandra’s wearing a Super Lucky Cat halter top of recycled fabric & Leigh’s in the most stunning vintage Ossie Clark dress ever with a Kirsten Muenster recycled silver & conflict-free stone necklace. Que Bella!

twins2.jpg

2) With serendipitous timing, these beautiful gals hit the road this week (check the tour page on their site – and GO!), touring all over this lovely land we call the U.S., with Ben Kweller, so in celebration…

This week “living GwG” is all about The Watson Twins – get ready to have your socks knocked off!

2 GwG friends go to the mat for vegan health & animal rights!

Rory Freedman (co-author of Skinny Bitch, animal rights activist, former GwG cover model & friend who’s writing has personally changed my life) and Chloe Jo Berman (founder & reigning goddess of Girlie Girl Army, animal rights activist, and overall inspiration) have been even busier than usual this week. After Rory got into a heated debate with Fox News “Health Expert”, Tanya Zuckerbrot over the effectiveness of a controversial PETA ad, Chloe sent the following open letter to Zuckerbrot in the defense of Rory, animals & the good health of us all:

Tanya,

I saw you on Fox last night advocating for veal and lamb as the healthiest choices for a healthy heart and fit body. You should be ashamed to call yourself a Nutritionist. Meat is full of hormones, feces, cancers, fat, and toxins – not to mention a cruel and unnecessary “food.” You also mentioned not “feeling bad at all” about eating meat. Have you actually BEEN to a slaughterhouse? Shame on you. Why don’t you go kill a baby lamb with your bare hands, and then tell me how “wonderful” meat is. Even an idiot knows that whole grains and fruits and veggies are the optimum diet. Even a RUBE knows you can easily get B, iron, and protein from plant based sources. You are clearly just trying to get more media by playing up the “meat is so wonderful!!” card. Unfortunately, you aren’t just getting yourself press — you are hurting the American public by feeding them lies and propaganda, and killing them with your VERY dangerous advice. Haven’t you read “The China Study”? Animal protein contributes to heart disease, cancer, acne, asthma, allergies, Crohn’s disease, arthritis, Alzheimer’s, and multiple sclerosis. I also found it funny how you said that vegans couldn’t have a higher sex drive or smell differently. There are many studies to the contrary, and as a vegan woman who has been with non-vegans – trust me – we can tell the difference. When you have carcass rotting on your insides, it definitely shows on your face, body, and affects your smell.

Rory Freedman SHINED and glowed like a gorgeous goddess next to your angry, botoxed, surgically altered face. It’s clear just by looking at the two of you what the better diet choice is. Rory clearly loves herself, and treats herself and the animals/ the planet with respect. You, on the other hand, hate yourself – only want to straighten out your curls and eliminate your ethnicity. I suppose, if you can’t find compassion for yourself, I guess finding compassion for the animals would be out of the question.

Here’s some reading for you: http://girliegirlarmy.com/blog/20080812/if-you-haven‘t-guessed-yet-we-are-eco-veggie-gals-and-here’s-why/

Here’s hoping your heart doesn’t look as bad as I’m guessing it does…
