GWG’s “My Style” contributor, inspirer and celebrity hairstylist… Vanessa Rose Price!

There’s one thing for certain about Vanessa Rose Price – she commands attention.  Whether it’s one of her edgy-rock-n-roll-badass-girlie outfits OR her signature platinum locks (that are sometimes turned pink or turquoise or black or shaven or all of the above)  OR her ability to be comfortable in any situation – from The White House to a campground… she’s one of those people you notice for all the right reasons.

The scintillating Ms. Price

Though her celebrity client list is unending, her current jam is traveling the globe with “the kid” (her playful nickname for Justin Bieber).  And yes, she did create that haircut.  She’s actually cut my hair a multitude of times and I have to say… this chick knows what she’s doing.  No wonder she is who she is.

Anywho… back to her style.  As a mostly “heels” girl myself, Vanessa has shown me that ballerina flats can be super sexy when paired with a bit of lace, a bit of metal and skinny jeans WAY before they were cool.

When asked about her style:

Oh shoot. My style is practical and sexy, at least I hope it is. I like to blur the line between delicate and rough. I’ve always been inspired by music. One of my first style icons I think was Suzie Quattro, I just remember her playing both Pinky and Leather Tuscadero on Happy Days. LOL. But my main inspirations throughout my life has always been the blondes, Bridgette Bardot, Deborah Harry, Edie Sedgwick and Nico. I feel they embody the delicate and roughness that I love so much. ~VRP

As for the GWG picks she adores:

The organic “Dolly”tee by Curator,  The Clutch in 70s Chic by GWG, the recycled cotton Suzani throw by In2Green, the Mercedes satchel by Hemptress, and the adorable Madame Lips necklace by Kristy Lin!

Check them HERE!

As for the charities Vanessa supports:

Animal Welfare InstitutePlanned Parenthood & St. Jude’s Children Hospital.

Compassion and style… is there any better combination?!

A sneak peek at GWG’s Spring style…

We’re getting in some FANTASTIC pieces for Spring, people!  Here’s a 1st look…

The Kimmie tee by Curator is one of our favorite pieces for the season.  Brilliant color, cool, laser cut pattern and super flattering fit.  Pair it with short shorts or a full length skirt… insta-style!

Another piece of chic by Popomomo.  The Zabriskie cutout dress is a not-so-basic staple… side seam pockets, a short, but-not-scandalous hemline and a loose cut, this dress will become a 3 season favorite!

I mean… this is real.  How hilarious/adorable/eye-catching is the Hello Sailor tote by 44 Knots?!  The perfect carry-all… sturdy, sustainable & chic! Made in the US of 100% recycled vintage sailcloth. Available in Small (10” x 7”), Medium (16” x 14”) & Large (21” x 15”). Colors may vary due to nature of materials, shown in large.

And speaking of hilarious/adorable/eye-catching, Feral Childe’s Lightning Bolt necklace hits all of those points!  This necklace is as out there as an actual lightning bolt… and yet, we think it’s totally cool! Not for every neck, this piece is the perfect gift for your favorite edgy, artistic girl (even if that girl is you). Finished with a little mint green Feral Childe charm.

And check out the Matty dress by Curator!  A little bit “Mad Men”… a little bit Hitchcock heroine, the Matty dress has a vintage vibe with a modern twist (sustainability). Of 100% organic cotton and finished with a flirty fold over collar, elastic waistband, mesh front & back details and side seam pockets.

HAPPY SPRING, PEOPLE!

Mega blog, The Frisky, asks me about my “favorite things”!

See original post here

Me & my husband, Nadim

Deana is the super cool lady behind Living Green with Glamour. “It’s essentially a lifestyle blog devoted to all things sublime and ‘sustainable’—whether that’s an organic lip balm, a vintage YSL handbag, a recipe for Vegan Bahn Mi or the best new pieces in eco-fashion and home décor,” explains Deana. “I have a handful of writers who contribute, including Justin Bieber’s hairstylist (go figure), an arty, bohemian husband and wife foodie team, a TV producer with a proclivity for vintage clothing and a Southern belle obsessed with DIY… but I do write most of the posts and edit everything else. The crux of my life’s manifesto is that absolutely no sacrifice in style needs to be made to have an environmentally, humanely and animal-friendly lifestyle.” Check out Deana’s favorite things after the jump!

Deana’s Favorite Things
The “Colette” dress by Koch: An exciting, new line out of Dallas.  We just got it in for early Spring and I’m already wearing it! Blazer and high boots now … mile-high wedges and a smile once the weather’s warmer.  It’s oh-so-flattering, of organic cotton and a total head turner … win-win-win!
Night Covers by The Watson Twins: I can’t stop listening to it!  The Twins’ dreamy, soulful voices covering a brilliant array of unexpected songs (everyone from Sade to The Black Keys) makes for the perfect mood music.
Tokyo wedges by Olsen Haus: This one almost surprises me… I’m typically more of a classicist when it comes to shoe design. Give me a ballerina flat or a jute-covered heel any day, but I can’t take my eyes off of these babies! Not only are they vegan (imperative to me), but they’re bold whilst still being beautiful. I think that’s a rare combo to come by these days.
The Polo Lounge at The Beverly Hills Hotel: This place has been one of my favorite spots for over a decade, but after two years of my pestering, they have several organic vodkas and gins. The vibe is upscale, but easy … the sun is shining again on their beautiful patio … and the valets treat my old, veggie oil Benz with as much respect as the brand new Bentleys that surround it.
And I’m shamelessly including the handbag I designed for GWG: But only because I’m truly obsessed with it.  Each season the textile changes, but the design stays the same (if it ain’t broke, right?).  For this spring, I went with a vintage, dead stock cotton from the 70s.  I love the juxtaposition of the weird pattern with the fairly serious colors.  I don’t wear a lot of prints, so carrying a zesty Clutch is the perfect dose of pattern for me.

To the Maxi… our love for long, long dresses!

There are very few things I enjoy more in the fashion world than a full length dress.  I love formal gowns, I love vintage caftans and I love modern Maxi dresses!  At Green With Glamour, we currently have 2 very different Maxis… and I own (and LOVE) them both.

Classically chic… And 70s inspired casual.

On the left we have the Carmelina by Kelly B.  It’s crazy flattering, elegant and soooooo easy to wear.  I throw it on with anything from flip flops to espadrille wedges and it always garners a wild amount of compliments.  The beautyWear it day or night… with pearls or with bold, nature-y jewelry like tagua.  And on the right, we’ve got the Fleetwood by She Bible.   It’s easy, breezy, and oh-so-Seventies!  It’s not quite as all-purpose as the Carmelina… but what the Fleetwood lacks in versatility, it makes up for 100 times of in WOW Factor!  There has not been a time when I’ve worn this that I haven’t had a stranger or 2 stop me to ask about it.  It’s super-flattering and unlike anything else out there.  Get you Max on, Ladies!!!

Spring’s My Style focus on writer, Tiffany Romigh

“I could gush on forever about Tiffany Romigh’s style… I’ve seen her rock a designer cocktail dress and Louboutins at a party where most everyone was wearing jeans (Musicians!?!), and reversely, I’ve seen her turn heads in a tank top, jeans and sneakers at a tony Beverly Hills watering hole. I’ve seen her wear rare Courreges at home and I’ve seen her work a daring neckline in the daytime. Tiffany dresses for her mood – not for you, me or whatever trend is rolling around. She takes risks (and not just with her style), and I so greatly admire that.

—Deana Bracken, GWG President & Creative Director

If nothing else, style to me is about options. My closet has had a Denim Invasion. A late 60s, French moment. A studs-and-leggings Sunday. And I even have the gear to be that woman at the pool; the one who wears her bathing suit with a pair of low, sling-back heels and a summer-weight cashmere wrap and drinks lemonade from a martini glass. (I just hope I have the guts to step into her skin.)

What am I saying? I’m saying that because of the new wave of style innovators and the always-chic design legends and their care and feeding of the objects that have become a real part of our lives, I can be a 70s rock chick one day and a demure coquette the next and still feel like myself. There are that many great things out there.

So this season, I bow my head and blow a kiss to options: a luxe cotton dress with a ruffle down each side.

A clutch that’s both backstage and center stage.

Some studs that come up roses.

Wooden sunglasses that are equally at home in a vintage station wagon and on a beach.

And a denim skirt that could have been designed in the 1920s or in 2020.

But here’s the thing. Whichever way the wind blows, it kind of doesn’t matter. Because when I put together something that feels perfectly “me”, it always feels like home. And with all the options this season, I can buy a home in every place I like.

An hommage to Ms. Thandie Newton: Gifted actress, Style icon, Advocate for change

We are absolutely honored to feature the incredible Thandie Newton and her kind words about Green With Glamour.  We’re longtime admirers of Ms. Newton’s grace, style, commitment to mindful living and serious acting chops.  She’s an inspiration.

I, personally, first became aware of Thandie in 1991 (OMG, that’s 20 years ago!) when I first saw a brilliant film called Flirting.  I was immediately taken with her confident, smart girl-meets-total knock out presence.  It’s a rare combination (though also possessed then by her Flirting co-star, Nicole Kidman).  The story is poignant, the direction is sultry yet serious and the acting is stellar.  And in the past 2 decades, Thandie has built a wonderful repertoire of performances in films (and t.v.) including Jefferson in Paris, Beloved, Mission Impossible II, Oscar-winning Crash (for which she won a BAFTA), W. (as Condoleeza Rice?!),  For Colored Girls and E.R. Amazing!

Seriously stylish, regardless of occasion

Thandie’s style is that of a true “icon”.  I don’t throw that word around lightly.  Very few actresses of our generation have earned it as far as I’m concerned.  But her looks are always pulled together and unique whilst never looking fussy or overdone and her approach to fashion is that of a yesteryear social doyenne (think Babe Paley, the Countess of Bismark, Gloria Guinness).   Easy elegance.  And the fact that she calls The Clutch that I designed her “favourite of all time” is just beyond! I’m blushing.

Add to that her dedication to the environment (like convincing other celebs to swap their gas guzzlers for energy savers) and humanitarian efforts (including the support of Breast Cancer Care, Artists for Peace and Justice and the NSPCC)… and our crush goes through the roof.  Well done, Ms. Thandie Newton.  You’re a role model for us all!

Sneak peek at GWG’s Spring 2011 version of The Clutch… in 70s chic!

Spring is just around the corner and Green With Glamour is ramping up for warm weather looks!  New  fashion is trickling into GWG Headquarters and our excitement is on the rise.  We’re really vibing a polished, 70s look for the upcoming season… pretty patterns, bold (without being too bright) hues and feminine-without-being frilly silhouettes.  And though our in-house line, The List by GWG is young & small… we love each piece.  All hail The Clutch in 70s Chic!

Made from vintage deadstock cotton fabric… from the actual 1970’s, The Clutch is the perfect piece for both ladies who prefer to use patterns sparingly (just imagine how cute with a beloved LBD and wedges) AND for ladies who like to be bold with prints (just picture with your favorite striped tee or floral sundress).  It even works sooner than Spring/Summer with a tank, cardy and skinny jeans. So, so, so stylish!  And like every piece from The List by GWG collection… it’s a limited edition – available only Spring/Summer 2011!

Lined in organic cotton/hemp linen, The Clutch is sustainable, stylish… and oh-s0-current!  COMING SOON….

Runway or Real Way: Black Lace top

Black lace is pretty much exquisite on any level (save the super cheap Forever 21 types).  It’s beautiful and artful and sophisticated.  And while Runway or Real Way isn’t typically much of a toss up for me (I always seem to side with the Green With Glamour piece – go figure)… were it not for the difference in price, this one would be a real toughie.  Both tops = stunning!

Vintage Lace top by Emily Factor, $275

Nero 3D Lace Manaroa top by Stella McCartney, $1975

Hey… if not for the $1700 cost differential, I think it would be a closer call, but I have to say the delicate Emily Factor cap sleeves really win this one for me.

Be Your Own (Stylish) Valentine!

Here’s my latest article for Naturally Savvy where I contribute articles on fashion…

I have to admit, I’m not the biggest fan of Valentine’s Day.  It’s not that I’m not a romantic… I certainly am.  What I don’t care for is the whole greeting card industry forcing us to be romantic, be stressed out or be just downright depressed for one silly day.  Honestly, what percentage of us actually likes V Day?

Here’s what I do like… jewelry!  So, why not use this ridiculous “holiday” as an excuse to treat yourself (or your loved one) to a little bit of bling?  And nothing is sexier than some eco-minded gems, so here are my favorites for this February 14th.

Sometimes it’s the jewelry not made of metal that truly makes a statement.  Fair Trade shopping resource, Global Exchange, carries gorgeous painted fabric necklaces, bracelets and earrings… and the prices couldn’t be more right ($7-$18).  Employing an intricate fabric painting method called “Kalamkari”, gifted artisans in India create pieces that are both exotic and elegant.

Kalamkari

Annnnnd sometimes it’s the jewelry that is made of metal that makes us weak in the knees, right?  I’ve recently discovered the gorgeous line, Real Jewels and Mon Dieu… I’m in love!  From super sweet styles to the ultra luxe, all of their pieces are ethically (and exquisitely) crafted… but since I’m in the Valentine’s mood, I’m opting for the Heart in Square necklace, $230.  So cute!

Heart in Square

Or if you’d rather give (or receive) roses instead, the recycled gold Rose Stud earrings ($95) by Julia Failey are where it’s at!  Available in pink gold, yellow gold or sterling silver, there’s a rose to suit every sweetheart you know.  And like I said, I fully support if that sweetheart is you!

Rose Studs

If you’re more interested in the digits, check out DLC Brooklyn’s Tambourine ring ($75).  It’s old school elegance with an edge – and made entirely of vintage materials.  Oh la la!

So, please, whatever your February 14th may bring, have fun, be healthy and by all means… treat yourself to a little something sparkly if you like!

Spend or Save: Smoky Quartz earrings… you decide!

Smoky Quartz was always a stone my mother dismissed when I was a girl… so, I guess I never really gave it a second thought until Green Diva showed me their gorgeous Brookshire earrings.  Hello, second thought!  Not only did I immediately put them into the Green With Glamour collection for our beloved clients, but I bought a pair for my mother (irony) and a dear friend immediately!

Now… I like Barneys New York as much as the next gal.  I think Simon Doonan has revolutionized high end retail and they do some “eco”, so ok.  But I couldn’t help and take pause when I saw the smoky quartz earrings they carry.  $1335… yikes!  Sure, the Marie Helene de TaillacLady Like” version is lovely, but I honestly have to say, I still prefer our Brookshire’s.

In the mood… Looking forward to Valentine’s Day.

I know, I know.  Valentine’s is a completely made up, “Hallmark holiday”.   And we shouldn’t be told when or how to be romantic.  I will, however, tell you that I have a serious weakness for lingerie, jewelry and sweets… and any holiday that celebrates those goodies – can’t be all bad.  That being said, here are my favorite picks for the upcoming festivities.

A lot of bang for a lot of buck…

Zen ruby & diamond ring by Dawes Design, $3850

With a double-sided ruby & diamond ornament, this ring is an absolute heirloom-to-be, statement piece! Jennifer Dawes has mastered the art of “eco” jewelry design as all of her gorgeous work is hand-crafted in Northern California of recycled golds & and conflict-free gems.

Sweets for your sweet…

Gourmet Vegan Chocolate assortments from Rose City, $23-$82

The variety of flavor combinations, the old school wrapping – I’m in love!  From a mom & pop confectioner, Rose City Chocolatiers, you can find a vast and varied offering of delicious and freshly made, all natural Belgium-style vegan chocolates.  I’m currently vibing the Peanut Butter Truffles.

And a little something for lights out…

The organic chemise by Only Hearts, $45

This is not just something for which I lust… it’s something I already own!  I wear it constantly (at night).  It’s deliciously soft organic cotton with a sweet, subtly sexy design. Of 100% organic cotton.  I can’t gush enough!

So… what are your Valentine plans?

Runway or Real Way: The embellished turtleneck

Not everyone can pull off a turtleneck… especially the very basic, boxy ones.  Here’s why the embellished turtlenecks are brilliant!  By employing an interesting silhouette and adding a bit of decoration, the turtleneck is brought up from frumpy to feminine.  And a high neckline is a fantastic way to showcase those beautiful, long necklaces!

And though we love the turtleneck with everything from wide-leg, long pants to the shortest of pants… we only bought 1 style this winter… but it’s a goodie!  From Feral Childe, the Tesla turtleneck is the perfect marriage of statement and basic.  Clearly, FC is not the only design house who had this style in mind for this season as once matronly, now only somewhat matronly fashion powerhouse, St. John, has released their own version (below).

The oh-so-chic (and sustainably made) Tesla, $99 at Green With Glamour.  The borderline ordinary (clearly we’re bias) version from St John at Neiman Marcus$895.

New jewels for a New Year.

I’m a creature of habit for many things… my jewelry definitely is a habit.  Earrings – either or Dawes Designs hoops, old pearl studs or Julia Failey rose studs, the watch my mother gave me in college, my wedding ring, my Julia Failey Octopus ring, a Tiffany bracelet I was given in high school, and possibly another bracelet or 2… often my Fahmina bangle cuff.  I’ve always admired the way other women wear necklaces, but for whatever reason, I’ve never really been that gal.  Well, I’m using the New Year as an excuse to change all of that!  Necklaces… here I come!

DLC Brooklyn is a wonderful line… creative, feminine without being “frilly” and made entirely of vintage materials.  We sell a lot of DLC  at Green With Glamour, so I’m going to a cue from our clients… and get some for myself.  The Pearl Pendant is a new design – and I love it.  Baby pearls, big pearl… pearls, pearls, pearls!

Pearl pendant by DLC Brooklyn

I’m also very much digging the Lotus double necklace by Julia Failey (clearly I’m a sucker for pearls).  It has a Chanel-goes-a-bit-Zen vibe.  Whether with tank top or favorite LBD, the easy sophistication of this piece is a real showstopper.  Of reclaimed gold vermeil, black onyx, crystals, and pearls.  C’est tres chic!

Lotus double with black onyx, crystals & pearls by Julia Failey

Another go-to designer for us at GWG, is Green Diva.  Her pieces are pretty and refined with just a hint of Earthiness.  I’m currently finding the Summer Solstice necklace particularly appealing.  The gold & silver combo is the best!  I wear these 2 metals together every day… so why not make it even easier on myself?!  Of hand etched 100% recycled pink gold pendant on a 100% recycled silver double chain.  Bring on Summer!

Another brilliant way to shop constructively: I-Ella

The good people at I-ELLA introduced themselves to us last week… and I have to say, I’m really excited, impressed and eager to shop!  I’ve browsed other online buy/sell/swap sites in the past, but NONE have come close to the quality and variety of pieces available at I-ELLA.

As I’m sure you can imagine, I get just about everything I wear (clothing, jewelry & handbags) from Green With Glamour.  However, I’ve been known to pepper my wardrobe with a vintage designer piece or 2 from Ebay, DecadesTwo and the like… but here’s why I think I-Ella outranks those others:

*They’re discriminating (in a good way) about what actually makes their site.  Excellent quality and condition seem present in every item.  From Chanel and Hermes to Philip Lim 3.1 and Diane von Furstenburg to J Crew and Nine West, they have a really well-curated selection of goodies (ranging from barely worn 2010 pieces to vintage).

*The site is easy to shop.  Their navigation system and categorizing is spot on!

*They GIVE BACK.  Every time you shop with I-ELLA, you give.  Each month, the I-ELLA team picks three charities to partner with running the gamut from funding for the arts in NYC to health initiatives in countries all across the world – including the Greater NYC Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, Keep a Child Alive and H.E.L.P.

*As a shopper, you can borrow, buy, swap and/or sell.  I love the swap concept because it’s perfect for those pieces you’re not willing to totally part ways with – but you can send off on a little adventure and then have returned to the haven of your own closet!

*You can shop in various celebrity closets!  Whitney Port, Elizabeth Rohm, Veronica Webb… and proceeds go to a cause they support.

Check out some of my personal favorites available right now

DVF                                 Lanvin                                                    J Crew

Feral Childe (eco)         YSL                                                                   April, May

I will say that everything I checked out was a size 6 or under, so… I’m hoping they broaden their range, but I’m pretty much convinced that I-ELLA is the place to go for 2nd-hand, online treasures!

It is a member’s only site, but you can use the referral code: INVITE2010 for instant access!

HOT or NOT for Fall fashion: Over-the-knee boots

We’re completely split down the middle here at Green With Glamour on the oh-so-controversial topic – is the upcoming trend of over-the-knee boots for Fall a good thing?   On one hand, they’re sexy, warm and smack of power… on the other hand, they may be a bit too “sexy”, they’re hard to wear if you don’t have pin-thin legs and limiting as far as skirt/dress hem length goes.  It’s a real conundrum!   That being said, here are our top 3 picks:

Ariel by Cri de Coeur

Zeda by Madden Girl

So… What’s your take?  Over-the-knees numbers… Yea or Nea?

Jonzing for Tagua jewelry this Summer!

Here’s my latest article for The Green Girls.  Enjoy!

I’m in a total jewelry state of mind this season.  Typically for Summer, I keep the jewelry to a minimum… big hoop earrings, maybe a bangle or two.  But this time around is different – I want bold, statement-y jewelry and I want lots of it!  Whether you opt for a simple sundress or a vintage kaftan, jewelry that packs a punch will take your look to the next level!

The taqua nut from South American rain forests is a fantastic, sustainable & chic material that lots of savvy jewelry designers… and here are some of my favorite pieces!

Chicago-based jewelry designer, Geraldine Rincon, first introduced me Taqua and her pieces (like the Safari Blue necklace above) are still some of the chicest around. Just picture this with a maxi dress and flat sandals – instant style!
And as I said before, I am typically a hoop earrings junkie… but this season I’m craving a more exotic look for my ears.

Ok so, they’re still hoop-ish (you know… old dogs/new tricks), but these gorgeous, colorful earrings by Green Diva (left) are perfectly vibrant and Summer-y.  On the right, are a stunning pair of Tagua slice earrings by Vermont-based design effort, Mui Chic. They’re edgy and luxe-looking (and available in 3 colors!).

Also by Mui Chic are these super gorge statement rings of naturally-dyed Taqua.  What a way to finish an outfit, right?

And don’t forget the wrists!  Stack these bracelets, or wear alone… they’re instant chic with any ensemble from a tank top and cut offs to your favorite Summer dress.  From Left: Tawa by Mui Chic, Shilsol Bay by Green Diva and Kandi by Mui Chic.
