GWG gets a lovely nod from wedding magazine, The Knot!

I’m in a wedding state of mind.  One of my dear friends is getting married next September… and for the 1st time EVER – I’m in the wedding.  So, also for the 1st time ever… I’m looking at wedding magazines (I may have looked at 1 or 2 years & years ago when I was engaged, but once we decided to elope – recycle bin).

 theknotcoverfinal1.jpg

The Knot is a gorgeous magazine.  It actually made me excited about helping to plan a wedding, miss that I never got that wedding dress, and of course, wish I could register for gifts all over again (check out GWG’s gift registry)!  And the editors of The Knot chose a wonderful gift, the trio of Fleur vases by Lighten Up Design… as one of their top picks!

The Women of Eco-Design… Our Muses, Our Colleagues!

Today is a big day for Green With Glamour – it’s our Fall launch and usually the work day that excites me most and swells me with pride, but of the 3 years we’ve been active… today is by far my favorite!  You see, we typically celebrate each season’s launch with a gorgeous celebrity photoshoot (and trust me – that’s exciting too), but this time around we decided to celebrate with a meeting of some of our favorite minds as we think this season is the BEST YET of the “green” style movement.  These are exceptional designers (some new to GWG, some have been with us for years) that inspire us on levels both creative and compassionate.  Women who are working today to preserve the integrity of tomorrow… these are The Women of Eco-Design photographed by the incomparable Lelah Foster!

The Classicist – Jadie Kadletz of PI Organic

This week’s obsession: the work of Chilean design students

So, Treehugger did this fantastic feature on a bunch of designs done by Latin American designers, many for Chile’s “Remade” contest (link, in case you read Spanish).  They were are wonderfully creative, but I just must talk about 3 in particular!

 1-barbie-doll-spoons.jpg

Have you ever???  And I LOVE that they utilize the bending waist!  The Barbie Doll legs salad servers are from the brilliant mind of Chilean design student, Catalina Villa.

1-plastic-bagboots.jpg

Between you and me… I actually lose sleep over the amount of plastic bags this planet is producing, using and discarding – which in turn makes Chilean design student, Camila Labra, my heroine because her entire line of boots is made from old paper bags!  I already have an email out to Camila, asking about purchasing… will let you know when I hear news.

1-cassette-tape-vest.jpg

And finally, the best possible use for those old mixed tapes some ex-boyfriend made for you.  I mean, C’mon…what the hell else are you going to do with something that has 5 tracks by Soundgarden on it? (but save the Mudhoney & Afgan Whigs… that boyfriend may not have been all bad).  Anyway, this shrug is actually knit from yesterday’s cassettes and is the perfect union of past & present!  Created by Fernanda Henríquez, Cindy Silva, Paulina Vilches and Teresa Monreal… more Chilean design smarties.

Cool Concept: White Box Projects

This is a new category for Living GWG… inspired by art consulting firm, White Box Projects.  I know, for many, buying artwork can be a daunting endeavor – but with the help of a friendly and knowledgeable art consultant, like White Box Projects’, Beth Caldarello… find the perfect piece for your space can be the awesome experience that acquiring art should be!  WBP just launched and currently reps 7 truly talented – and quite varied artists, but photographer Mickey Smith is my absolute favorite…

But I’m also digging on the Gouache works by Frida Larios…

So, if you need a little hand-holding, introductions to the works of up-and-coming artists or even just straight advice on what art suits your space… check out White Box Projects.  Undaunting, exciting and well-selected art for all!

Bargain Buy: Squirelly Love… Found on Etsy.

For whatever reason, I’ve been looking for things to make me smile lately.  And wow… do these little nuts make me smile!  For me Etsy can be a little daunting, but sometimes I do set aside a chunk of time to peruse their pages.  This fantastic piece, called Squirelly Love, is from a seller who goes by Enormous Champion.  I love the sleek design, the cheeky vibe and the heartfelt message (see below).

 squirrelly-love.jpg

Made in the USA from sustainably harvested wood. The heart was painted with a non toxic, no-VOC water based paint. The little squirrels were left the natural color of the beautiful wood. All are finished and sealed with beeswax.

As put by Enormous Champion:

These two squirrels are in love, plain and simple. But, they know that they have to work together to maintain their relationship. Compromise and team work are key. Together they hold their little love up

.squirrelly-love4.jpg squirrelly-love3.jpg squirrelly-love2.jpg

I know this isn’t one of my typical bargain buys, but for $30… a well-designed piece that puts smiles on faces certainly seems like a bargain to me.

GWG pick of the week: Recycled cotton Ikat throw by In2Green

Half of me is still trying to squeeze every last glorious drop out of Summer… and half of me is running full speed toward Fall.  And while it’s not yet a Fall fashion climate here in LA, I can start making seasonal changes to my home.  As I’ve written before, our home is a small, weirdo 1923 cabin in the Silver Lake Hills – 3 rooms.  So, there isn’t a whole lot of room for seasonal re-decorating, but I do like to make a few impactful changes to switch up the mood of the place.  I opt for heavier, more colorful china in the colder months, I swap out my Summer-y sequins accent pillows for more elegant, patterned ones – and I add layers to my vintage Chesterfield sofa with tapestries & throws (why should I be the only one layering for Fall?).

ikat-greige.jpg

Recycled Cotton Ikat Throw ($125)

Soft, stylish, & substantial, each throw is created from pre-consumer clippings cast off during the cut & sew process (think… all the cotton on a bolt that ISN’T used in the making of mass-produced t-shirts).  A brilliant way to reduce waste and preserve our precious resources!   Available in other colors.

Perfect for a picnic or patio dining!  Confetti Melamine is a total throwback, but RECYCLED confetti Melamine is completely current – and really cute, right?  I found these pieces at Target… tumblers, bowls and divided plates (ideal for those of us who can’t stand when your potato salad assaults your watermelon) .  Sold in packs of 6, the price starts at $19.99!

Blog Love: Green Your Decor

There are many, many “green” home design blogs out there and in my opinion, Green Your Decor is one of the best!  The editor, Atlanta-based Interior Designer Jennae Peterson, has a real knack for featuring stylish and reasonably-priced “green” goods that are almost always available to the masses.  From elegant lamp shades to super-chic cribs to inventive artwork, Green Your Decor’s articles are informative and to the point, but Jennae always sprinkles in a little helpful design advice as well.

gyd-lamp-shade.jpg gyd-art.jpg

In addition to the great product stories, Green Your Decor also posts fantastic (and never too difficult) DIY projects and good-to-go Rooms in a Box (I particularly like the “Man Cave).

I like to call it the “Person Cave”… as I’m pretty sure I would enjoy this room as much as my husband!

This week’s obsession: Vintage patio furniture

I do realize that it’s a little late in the season… and most of you already have your outdoor spaces in tip top shape, right?  To be honest, mine is currently “just OK”.  I live in a crazy 1923 cabin in the Silver Lake Hills with pitched pine ceilings and a “rustic” (at best) patio.  I love it… it’s kind of a weirdo place, but I love it.  My tiny house is filled with beloved furniture pieces & artwork – my Grandmother’s 9ft tufted Chesterfield sofa, our limited edition Verner Panton chairs in turquoise (!) around the dining table and the signed Poolside Gossip we bought the day before Slim Aarons passed away.  There isn’t room for much, so what we have – we have to love.  All summer I’ve been staring at the Aaron’s print (for some reason, it’s more “visible” in our new place)… and I’ve become obsessed with the wire mesh patio pieces in the foreground of the photo.  Just today – light bulb!  What does my “rustic” patio need? (it currently is dressed with wooden Mid Century tables, benches & chairs – great stuff, just lackluster in the space)  What could give it a major dose of B12… you guessed it!

poolside.jpg

I’m a huge fan of vintage furniture… it feeds my need for “re-use” and it can be one hell of a fantastic hunt!  My favorite spot to cruise for old, modern finds is Palm Springs (I empty my car and head to the dessert to fill it with thrift store & estate goodies at least 6 times a year)! HOWEVER, you don’t always have to go to the Rat Pack’s old getaway to score super-stylish patio pieces.  Hit Craigslist.org, My Friend… or if you have the time, go to the actual Estate Sales!

Eco-upholstery 101

I’ve found that there are just too many people who feel overwhelmed by re-upholstery projects – and as a result they go out and settle for some bland, non-eco alternative – not good, People.  Honestly, the last thing we need in this world (well, maybe not the last, but…) is more boring, anti-sustainable furniture pieces junking up our homes, thrift stores and landfills!

 rubie-green-girl-on-bed.jpg

Welcome to eco-upholstery 101!  My latest article for Eco-Stiletto tells how you can give your furniture a serious style upgrade without breaking the bank:

Do you find yourself daunted by the idea of reupholstering your well-worn furniture pieces?  Fear not! It’s much easier and less expensive than you might think to get your old furniture looking like new—the green way, naturally. Whether your cat mauled what was once your grandfather’s favorite chair or you just found a stellar thrift store sofa in desperate need of an update, we’re here to lay down the fastest and simplest methods for eco-chic reupholstering.

To get started, here’s a short list of what you’ll need:

1. A piece of furniture. (Duh.)

2. An upholsterer. If you don’t have one already, check with friends for referrals.

3. Enough fabulous eco fabric & decorative trim for the project (see resource suggestions below). To estimate the proper amount, either consult your upholsterer—if the piece is too large to easily transport, take photos and dimensions with you instead—or use an online upholstery calculator (we like the one at Designers Sketchbook).

4. And finally, what no eco upholstery project would be complete without…kapok!  What’s Kapok, you ask? Why, it’s a soft and super-sustainable fiber found in the tropical forests of Central and South America, and Asia. It’s similar to cotton, sans the environmental impact, because it falls naturally from the trees rather than needing to be harvested or treated with pesticides. Kapok is the perfect replacement for down—equally cushy and luxe-feeling, but completely animal friendly. And it’s far superior to any sort of toxic poly option.

Now that you know what you need, let’s talk about where to get it!

You’ve probably got the furniture already. If not, hit Craigslist or your favorite secondhand shop.

So, now let’s focus on the fabric. There are so many great organic-cotton, upholstery-weight fabrics out there. The hardest part of this whole endeavor may be having to choose!

Mod Green Pod, with their oh-so-appropos tagline “shaking the beige off organic,” was a pioneer of eco-style upholstery fabrics. As pictured on our home page, their organic cottons are durable, reasonably priced and super chic, and a dose of MGP gives your room an instant B12 shot. From whimsical, colorful damasks to bold retro prints, all Mod Green Pod fabrics are printed with non-toxic dyes and made in the U.S.

mod-green-patterns.jpg

Mmmmmm… Mod Green Pod!

If you’re going for more of a classic vibe, check out the bright and elegant designs of Rubie Green.  From 1970’s-inspired contemporary to airy but traditional pineapple prints, Rubie Green’s selection of high-end, high-style fabrics has something for everyone. And, of course, they too are printed on 100% organic cotton with low-impact dyes. You just can’t go wrong!

 rubie_green.jpg

Gorgeous fabrics from Rubie Green!

Finally, your must-have item: Kapok. First check with your upholsterer to see if they stock it—and prepare to be surprised. Even non-eco upholsterers have been known to work with Kapok because it’s abundant, affordable, and easy to use. If not, buy it yourself and bring it along—any decent upholstery shop will be happy to oblige!

And—presto change-o—you’ve got a refreshed, recycled, eco-beautiful piece of furniture to sit on and show off.

Get 20% off all fabric yardage and wallpaper through August 31st at Mod Green Pod with “stiletto” at check out.

I heart Hummingbirds!

I recently moved into an awesome little house in the Silver Lake Hills of Los Angeles.  Some of my friends have refered to it as a “treehouse” because it seems suspended high in a group of trees… and with these trees comes – you guessed it, BIRDS!  I’ve put up a couple of feeders for the local songbirds – but it’s the Hummingbird feeder that I watch the closest.

Fast, colorful & focused, the Hummingbird may be one of the smallest birds on the planet but it’s inspiration on design is huge!

Check out these super-cool magnetic bookends!!!  Made fairly in Mexico from 100% recycled aluminum and powder-coated in red or white… this is clearly the coolest way to display your books.

For the little ones I found this oh-so-cute organic cotton onesie. I’ve actually given it a bit of thought… and I’m pretty sure if they made this in an adult-sized tee, I would totally wear it (and I’m not even a t shirt type of gal)!  But back on topic, this little number also has a corresponding knit cap… it’s just about too much to stand!

And last but not even close to least… the feeder!  WAY cuter than the classic design, this lovely multi-bird smorgasbord is crafted from recycled glass and available in 4 colors.  I can’t recommend enough that you add one to your outdoor space… watching these little beauties are a true inspiration!

Bargain Buy: Bio-degradable waste can

LOVE this one!  In a time when Bargain Buys and Obsessions kind of go hand-in-hand… this waste can (of all things) really fits the bill!  It’s fantastically chic – very lates 60s hallucinogenic, very Marc by Marc Jacobs from a couple of seasons ago, but still high-style.  It’s bio-degradable – completely breaks down in a landfill, rather than clinging to the earth for eternity.  AND it’s only $18, People!

umbra-can.jpg

By Umbra, I saw this can at Target but don’t find it on their website.  You can, however, order it at Plushpod – and they have in 3 different colors/styles.  Waste not… Want yes!

Fair Trade… not just Zulu baskets anymore.

Let me start this by saying… I love Zulu baskets.  They’re intricate, hearty and gorgeous.  They also celebrate the ingenuity and artistic talents of a culture that is not my own.  That being said, for years the Fair Trade options out there weren’t exactly plentiful and once you got your fill of Zulu baskets, Peruvian pottery or batiked textiles from India… that was pretty much it.

 zulu-basket.jpg

Well, NOT ANY MORE!  There’s a wonderful awareness of the importance of buying “local” these days.  Food, wine, furniture, artwork and even clothing… and I think it’s fantastic!  Not only are we boosting support of artisans and farmers, etc. in our own communities, but we’re reducing the amount of cross-country and even international shipping – which in turn has the potential for greatly reducing our overall carbon footprint on this beautiful planet of ours.  I’m on board, I get it, I completely support it.

Recycled papier mache lamp made fairly in Haiti

However… a good number of us reading this post have the luxury of being from a fully “developed”, democratic and capitalist society.  We may take for granted that buying locally is one of many options rather than the only one.  For many people across the globe (in developing nations) their lives, work and total existence are drawn from only their own small village or their over-populated, highly polluted and economically devastated city.  And for many of our brothers & sisters in said situations… decent wages, health care and education is scarcely even a dream.  Enter FAIR TRADE!

Blue & White Ceramic planter made fairly in Viet Nam

Social welfare organizations all over this crazy planet have taken on the glorious mission of not only securing fair wages and health care for workers & artisans in these developing nations where their governments have failed them, but sometimes also providing schooling for the worker’s children and housing for the families.  AND Fair Trade is also a wonderful way to celebrate the craftsmanship and artistic methods of talented people worldwide!

Lotus journal made fairly in India

Yes, this has been a long introduction to some of my favorite Fair Trade finds and if you’ve lost track… my point is – buying local is an amazing concept.  Do it with Godspeed.  But also, remember our friends, remarkably crafty and living with much less, and support this wonderful thing we call FAIR TRADE!  We all deserve at least the necessities, don’t we?

GwG pick of the week: Recycled Papier Mache Snail

I’m not sure what it is about this (not-so) little snail… but I can’t keep my eyes off of him!  He’s a new add to the GwG collection, so he’s still got that fresh car smell, but it’s more than that.  He’s bright & curious, statement-y and maybe even a bit shifty.  Regardless, I love him.  White is my favorite, but the others do make me smile.

This week’s obsession: Custom & Sustainable furniture… Creating heirlooms for generations to come!

I love, Love, LOVE high-end furniture design… LOVE IT!  A beautifully designed and perfectly executed piece is like a Stradivarius violin or a residence by Mies van der Rohe – meticulously crafted and wonderfully functional.  My latest article for Ecostiletto is about 2 in demand & brilliant contemporary “eco” furniture designers, Facundo Poj and Cliff Spencer.  Check it:

 facundopol_table.jpg

Table by Facundo Pol

cliff-spencer-rocker.jpg

Rocker by Cliff Spencer

Let’s be honest, a made-to-order piece will cost a bit more, but you’ll be investing in a high-quality, durable piece that likely will become an heirloom, passed along for generations to come, rather than ditched in a landfill at the end of its limited life. We think that kind of legacy is well worth the price.

“Life is short. Live simply.” That’s the motto of cabinetmaker and furniture designer Cliff Spencer. We’re knocked out by Spencer’s knack for turning reclaimed woods into stunning works of functional art—a talent he uses to create classic-looking custom pieces for renowned green architects and Beverly Hills ecoistas alike. Whether it’s a one-of-a-kind bed frame or conversation-worthy rocking chair, Spencer works with each client to craft precisely the right piece from anything from old wine barrels to fallen backyard trees.

If you’re in the market for something a little more cutting—or in this case, bending—edge, check out the work of Miami-based designer, Facundo Poj. Turning spectacularly sustainable bamboo into sinewy, statement-making furniture is Poj’s M.O. We’re wowed by Poj’s technique, which involves layering nearly 30 layers of engineered bamboo ply and completing each piece with water-based and custom-colored finishes.
